Family Stories;
Madeline Avery Smith

Our daughter, Madeline Avery Smith, was born on July 24th, 2002. She was diagnosed with MMA mut 0 three days later. Not knowing the damage that might have already been done, all we could do is begin treatment and hope Madeline would build strength and fight through her challenges. She is now 4 years old. She attends a private Montessori school and does very well in her class. We were told she would probably have learning disabilities, but she is one of the top students in her class. She is also a top gymnastics student in her gym class and is very athletic. We couldn't be more proud.

We are not sure what the future holds for Madeline. But, we take one day at a time. Her kidneys were damaged we believe from the many hospitalizations in her first two years. (average 5 hospitalizations per year). We increased her protein intake and now we average 1-2 hospitalizations per year. I also know that MMA patients naturally have kidney damage usually on top of these acidotic episodes, but I am sure these didn't help. She is also really small for her age. But you can't tell her this, she gets really mad!

Right now Madeline is on propimex-1 and propimex-2. She also takes bicitra and carnitine. We have her on a 20 grams of protein a day diet of regular food.

We are so proud of our Madeline. We don't know what it is like to be her and to fight through her episodes. Madeline hardly complains and loves life. She has shown us what life is really about and to appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Trey, Jessica, Madeline, and Ryder Smith
